41 Housekeeping, and winning!

That's not me ... just saying, you might have thought I was pulling a Granny Chic stunt!

I was moving the furniture around in here yesterday - I hope that didn't confuse you if you happened to drop by - and attacking the dust bunnies and the cobwebs with a virtual feather duster. I haven't put everything back exactly where it was before but most things are much the way they were. A tad cleaner and tidier perhaps, but not significantly altered! That said, there's a shiny new email subscription button over there on the right. And another addition underneath it that will add knitsofacto to Google Reader.

I mostly keep track of the blogs I enjoy via email subscription, or Google Reader/Bloglines. How about you? I know many of you use Google Friend Connect and/or a blogroll. Instead of the latter I have the Coffeehouse which was my answer to my blogroll angst, although I still feel bad about the very many brilliant blogs I don't list. Note: as of 14.01.2013 the Coffeehouse gang can be found at the bottom of the page, in a blog list titled 'People you should meet'. Without a doubt, though, email subscriptions are the most reliable - which is why I'm forever plugging subscriptions to knitsofacto* ... the people who complain they've missed a post are never the email subscribers - but of course emails are not for everyone.

By the way, did you know that Google Reader has a bookmarking option that's akin to Pinterest's 'Pin It' button? Open Google Reader up and click on the little cog top right. Now click on 'Reader Settings' in the drop down menu, and then click on the 'Goodies' tab. Scroll down until you see 'Subscribe as you Surf' and drag the 'Subscribe' button to your bookmarks bar. Henceforth, if you land on a blog you'd like to keep reading, adding it to Google Reader is just a click away!

And this isn't me either, obviously!

Bloggy housework is the only kind I have the energy for just now ... I've not been sleeping well and I'm totally bushed if the truth be told. After a couple of nights when I had little choice but to stay up until dawn - with a sickly whippet who'd enjoyed a run on the beach and a tasty snack of very dead, very green, crab** - my sleep pattern seems to be completely shot. Yesterday I made myself a cuppa, settled on the sofa with my laptop intending to catch up with some blog reading, and promptly dozed off! And I was in danger of doing the same this morning, but I pulled myself together and did the giveaway draw instead.

Thank you so very much to all who entered, and for sharing so many snippets about where you were born and bred, reading them was a joy. Listing everyone according to book preference and so on proved to be a bit of a challenge mind you - there was more than one Anonymous who left no hint as to their identity at all - but list you I did, and then I let the random number generator do its thing.

And the winners are (you'll have to imagine the accompanying drum roll) ...

*
That's Sue of Mr Micawber's Recipe for Happiness on the left, who wins Born & Bred and the Titus yarn (those are links to baa ram ewe's online store so the unlucky many can buy themselves some goodies if they wish). And Valerie of Acorn Moon on the right, who wins Recipes & Rascals: Food and Funny Goings-on in Yorkshire

Ladies if you could email me your addresses - there's an 'Email me' link top right - I'll post your winnings off pronto and hope to beat the Christmas postal rush!

♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

And I won a giveaway myself***! Truly immense thanks to Gilly at Gilly Makes for Olive the Other Reindeer (knitted), who landed at knitsofacto yesterday, along with her charming little companion, Ollie the Owl (crocheted). I've been trying to photograph the partners in crime - they are both possessed of the kind of cheeky countenances that I fear could spell trouble - but the light here is appalling again today and the whippets have been rather too anxious to meet Miss O. All I have are some gloomy shots of barely visible soft toys obscured by assorted out of focus whippety noses, so to see Olive in all her marvellousness I suggest you pop over to Gilly's and admire her and Ollie there.

And now, if you'll excuse me, I have a lot of blog reading to catch up on, if I can just stay awake ...

♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

* I promise that if you do subscribe to email updates you will only get a) email notifications of new posts shortly after they go up, and b) very occasional notifications when something important is happening on the blog. I hate being bombarded with emails I didn't ask for just as much as you do and would never inflict that on anyone.

** He's all better now, never fear.

*** I've won so many lately I live in fear of forgetting to thank someone. I'm also wondering if I should stop entering them, it seems rather unfair that I keep winning!

  2. Thanks for that Google Reader tip - I didn't know about it. It will be very useful to me because I keep up with all my blogreading via Google Reader. I find it very reliable but then I check it often.
I never use the follow button on blogs and have no idea who is following me. I don't really see the point of it.

    1. I'd happily remove Friend Connect from knitsofacto - visually it's an eyesore - but readers do seem to like it. That said I'm told that it's one of the many things Google plans to 'retire' at some future date.

  3. I love the two photos above of ladies cleaning! I don't know which one I like the best!
I like to use Google reader, but I don't really want to be on anyone's emailing list - there are enough things to see to in my inbox without adding to it. I know that lots of blogs are putting little messages to encourage people to get email updates - and I like to feel free. I'm sure it's a good idea for people who like this way of being informed.

  5. I use Google Reader, and I have a little button on my toolbar that says 'Next' - I click it and it opens the next unread blog on my list. It's on the same page as the 'Subscribe' one you mentioned, which I also have, both very handy!

  6. How do I know, when blogs-I-enjoy, post a new entry?????

Not sure if anyone else does it, my way. ,-) I made a Private Blog, and put the Blogger Gadget on it... I have the blogs-I-enjoy, on this blog. And the Blogger Gadget shows when they post a new post. (The blog rises to the top of the list.)

I prefer to not show my list of blogs-I-enjoy. Because I do cease reading some, now and then. And I begin reading other blogs, now and then. It's those I cease-to-keep-reading, which can cause hard-feelings, if everyone can read my List. And notice when a blog goes missing........

So, I keep it in a Private blog. I easily see new posts. And no hard feelings. It works for me!

    :-)

  8. I have just been exploring Google Reader, something I didn't know I had. How nuts is that.

So far I've favoured the blogroll. It's on my site, I see it all the time. If a blog is updated I know about it straight away. But I've only been blogging for a few months and already it's becoming unwieldy. I fear that one of these days it will take over my site!

But, like my own, some of the blogs I keep tabs on are not on Blogger. So presumably the Reader will not work for those. It's something I really need to think about sorting out. I fear a spot of housekeeping is coming my way too.

    1. Google reader should work for all blogs, regardless of where they are hosted. Anything with an RSS/Atom feed in fact!

Have a better night's sleep tonight. Jx

  10. Oh Annie, I know how crippling lack of sleep can be and how it can make your brain feel like mush so I really hope you get a good night soon, hopefully tonight! Nice housekeeping by the way!

  13. Dearest Annie,

You have all my sympathy! Our Gaspard turned one on Saturday and feasted on a birthday bone only to throw up ALL night! An emergency trip to the vet on Sunday followed by a week of not eating and only graciously accepting a few drops of water from my hand. Tonight he has returned from the vets again and all seems better. I have been tired just like you.

Annie, I would just like to say that I am thinking about leaving my space and, if indeed I do I just wanted to say how much I have loved spending time here with you here. It's been a treat!

  16. Congratulations Annie....Olive looks to be a delightful addition to your family.
Bloggy homework very apt....don't I just know about it....I'm sure I could make my blog more efficient for readers and much more attractive to the eye but its all I can do at present to follow in a slap happy way...lurking a lot ....reading as much as I can which I must add I do enjoy and get annoyed when life interrupts. I am trying my best and I see others are struggling too so if you can't beat them I must join them.....that's looking for excuses.
Can I also add I always find your posts are such a good read ..... there's a wit there I enjoy :-)

    keep well

    Amanda :-)

This IS my lucky week. :)

Thank you so very much! And I'm glad to hear the doggy's feeling better. Congratulations on your own win - that reindeer is adorable.

  18. I love that google thingy and am not sure what will happen when they get rid of i-google. Will we just lose all our subscriptions?
Your whippet obviously fancies a bit of sea food, poor love. Hope he feels better. I have a chucky 11 year old as we speak but I don' think it was dead crab activated. I'll check!

    1. Commiserations to the chucky 11 year old, I sincerely hope he's not literally as sick as the dog was!

Re. iGoogle, hopefully Google Reader is going nowhere so your rss feeds can be exported there. But all the changes that are afoot are another reason so many bloggers are pushing email subscriptions.

  20. Hi Annie...I don't like my email to be awash with blogs coming in. I like them to be accessed at will here on google...just personal choice. I am so pleased you won the reindeer and the owl, who better to win them than a knitter! I haven't a whippet but my three motley dogs would have loved them to bits too!

  22. Since you asked the question - I use two methods to read the blogs I enjoy. The main one is Bloglovin, which I adore even though it can occasionally be a bit temperamental. Sorry, my techno abilities don't run to putting a link for it here - but just Google it if you're interested. The second route - and my back-up for the odd Bloglovin glitch days, is the reader on Wordpress - which I suppose is really only useful if you use Wordpress already.

    1. The little heart in the connect bar above is a Bloglovin link ... perhaps I should pop it underneath the Google Reader link. Part of the point of this post was to canvas opinion on these things and translate that into making the blog as easy to access as possible, so thank you for this :D

  23. Lovely makeover. I have you on Google Reader but I read you on Flipboard on my ipad - it's a great way to see all my favourite blogs in a magazine format.

  24. I subscribe to your posts through email but just feel I can't do that with all the blogs I follow! The only thing is I haven't found a comment box on them yet. Well done to the winners of your giveaway (shucks! Sniff!) and to you for your win. I fell that it doesn't matter if you've won a lot recently just keep on entering. Hats what they're there for! You rest up. It sounds as if that's the first priority especially with Christmas looming. Take care of yourself. Joan

  25. Well done on winning the giveaways. Maybe you shoud buy a lottery ticket.

  26. Congratulations to the winners of your wonderful giveaway, I hope they enjoy their prizes. Glad to hear that the little whippet is all better, I know what a worry it is when out doggies are sick.

  27. Oh dear. Your poor whippet, and poor you! Why do dogs do this to themselves? It seems they missed out on basic animal instinct when it comes to knowing what is good for them. Once Fergus gets something in his mouth I have a very hard time getting back out again, too. Yours are probably the same. I'm glad your dog is okay, but sorry your sleep pattern has been disrupted.

As far as reading blogs goes, I put them in favourites in groups, one for knitting, one for cooking, one for eclectic blogs, etc. Then I open all the window tabs at once on the Bookmarks Bar on my Mac. What you have said about Google Reader makes me think that might be a more efficient way to approach it. Thanks for the tip! And I hope you soon catch up on your sleep.

  28. Congratulation to all three lucky winners. :-) So sorry to hear about the poorly whippet and your lack of sleep, Annie. I can cope with almost anything if I get some sleep, but without it I'm a wreck!

Your tidied-up blog looks great and if you have time I'd love to how how you added the Add to Google Reader button. I already have an email subscription box and the Google Friend Connect gadget, but I'm a firm believer in making it as easy as possible for people to follow my blog in any way they choose. I keep up with all the blogs I follow in Google Reader, as this way suits me best.

  29. Congrats to the lucky ladies and to you, Annie. I hope you get your sleep patterns straightened out. I've had that problem much too often and it's not fun. I found the subscribe button quite by accident one day playing around and I love it. Glad you have posted about it so others can get the use of it. Love the tidied up verson of the blog and absolutely love the photos of the cleaning ladies. I could really use them here on the Front Porch. :)

Glad the poor puppy is doing better.

    Have a great day!!

    Hugs,
    Sharon

  32. Your pst is fun as always. Congratulations to the winners. I read my favourite blogs on google reader. It works perfectly. :-)

  33. Poor you. Could it be possible that dogs pay for their marvellous sense of smell with absolutely zero taste buds? My sleep pattern has been rather shot to pieces lately as well, though not because of naughty whippets. Could it be the cold and winter in general that has put us so out of sync and out of sorts? Here's to happier days - and nights.

  34. All looking very spick and span Annie and unlike normal housework, nobody will wander across it with dirty shoes.
I tried email notifications but they seemed to take time to arrive. I now put blogspot blogs into Google Reader and wordpress and others into the Wordpress reader. Wordpress reader also notifies me if the blog author replies to my comment so if I've asked a question I don't have to keep revisiting the blog and wade through the comments.

  35. Glad your poorly whippet is better. They will insist on eating the most revolting things won't they!
